HOW THE RACE IS WON

In 1967, two automotive engineers with a passion for motorsports began fine-tuning engines for Mercedes-Benz racecars in an old mill. Today, as the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG creates some of the most sought-after vehicles in the world. They're the product of skilled craftsmen, designers and engineers who live to test the limits, and one shared conviction: on the road to driving performance, short cuts never win the race.

ONE MAN, ONE ENGINE

Some things can't be mass-produced.

From the beginning, the "One Man, One Engine" philosophy has guided AMG's approach to manufacturing. Even now, every AMG engine is hand built from start to finish by one of about 50 AMG Master Engine Builders in a special facility.

As the final step in the assembly process, the engine-maker affixes a plaque engraved with his signature to the engine cover. It's an enduring reminder that even the heart of a Mercedes-AMG has a soul.

An Accelerated History of AMG

Driving performance since 1967

  • 1967AMG is Born

Automotive engineers Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher start AMG in an old mill in Burgstall, Germany. Their mission: to develop and test racing engines for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

  • 1971Making Headlines

Shocking a field of smaller cars, the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG finishes 1st in its class and 2nd overall in the grueling 24 Hours of Spa. AMG is on the automotive map.

  • 1976A Home in Affalterbach

With customer requests for highly individualized, high-performance vehicles increasing, AMG outgrows the old Burgstall mill and sets up shop in the town of Affalterbach.

  • 1980Winning Ways

AMG reasserts its motorsports prowess with a victory in the Touring Car Grand Prix on the legendary Nürburgring in a 375-hp 450 SLC AMG Coupe.

  • 1986The Hammer Drops

With an unheard-of top speed of nearly 190 mph and 375 lb-ft of brute torque, the refined-looking 300E AMG 5.6 is dubbed "The Hammer."

  • 1990Joining Forces

Daimler-Benz and AMG sign an official agreement of cooperation. By 2005, AMG becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler.

  • 1993First of its Kind

The C36 AMG, the first car jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG, begins production. In two years, it becomes the first AMG model ever marketed in the U.S.

  • 1994Repeat Performance

AMG's dominance on the track continues, with the new C36 AMG. The C-Class will go on to become the most successful car in German Touring Car Championship history.

  • 2002Supercharged

Equipped with a supercharger - "kompressor" in German - the revolutionary 5.5-liter AMG V-8 engine debuts in the next-generation SL55 with an output of nearly 500 horsepower. Both the vehicle and its powerplant are legends on arrival.

  • 2004Titan of Twelve

Courtesy of the new 6.0-liter biturbo V-12 AMG engine under its hood, the 2005 CL65 AMG Coupe launches with a staggering output of no less than 603 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

  • 2006Engine of Change

The first series-produced engine developed wholly by AMG is unveiled. A 6.3-liter V-8, it reigns as one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in production.

  • 2006Seeing Black

In Europe, the new AMG Performance Studio introduces its limited-production Black Series line with the SLK55. Boasting higher performance through racing-derived technology, the Black Series arrives on U.S shores the following year with the CLK63.

  • 2007A New Era

Coinciding with the company's 40th anniversary, AMG launches the groundbreaking C63. With exclusive AMG styling inside and out, the most powerful production C-Class ever also establishes a new design aesthetic unique to AMG.

  • 2010Instant Icon

AMG introduces its first vehicle developed entirely in-house: the SLS AMG. A super sports car with gullwing doors, it earns accolades and admiration the world over.

  • 2010Dynamic Duo

Given the internal designation "M157", the new 5.5-liter biturbo V-8 AMG engine premieres in the S63. Thanks in part to a pair of turbochargers, the M157 is not only more powerful than its larger, naturally aspirated predecessor, but also 25% more fuel-efficient.

  • 2012Electrifying Performance

The 2013 launch of the zero-local-emissions SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive for the European market is announced. Using technology from Formula 1, it will be the fastest electrically powered car on earth.

Performance

A team effort

While the hand-built engines usually steal the spotlight, the AMG approach to raising heart rates is anything but one-dimensional. It's about using all the weapons in the engineering arsenal to create a high-performance driving experience that's simply without equal.

Power delivery

With each successive generation, AMG engines produce more muscle more efficiently, thanks to constant innovation in areas such as turbocharging and direct injection. But it's the job of AMG transmissions to refine that power and deliver it with both speed and precision. Advanced gearboxes, up to four selectable driving modes, and racing-derived features including dual- or multi-clutch technology are more than up to the task.

Handling

In a Mercedes-AMG, everything from weight distribution and wheel design to load transfer and frame rigidity has been engineered for responsiveness. AMG suspensions feature exclusive components and hardware, not to mention sophisticated architecture honed over years on the track. Likewise, AMG braking systems employ technologies from the world of racing like heat-conquering compound discs and carbon-ceramic construction.

Sound

At AMG, what you hear when you put your foot down is just as important as what you feel. More than just tuned for performance, AMG exhaust systems are acoustically tuned to unleash the muscular growl of AMG engines during acceleration and downshifts, as well as when you fire the ignition. At cruising speeds, you're treated to a mellow yet throaty reminder of the power within.

Frame of Reference

When it comes to weight, less is more in the performance equation. That why AMG engineers selected aluminum -- around two-thirds lighter than steel -- for the skeleton of the SLS AMG. At just over 530 pounds, this revolutionary spaceframe delivers superior strength, a lower center of gravity and extraordinary handling characteristics.

Design

The shape of performance

Even at first glance, you can tell there's something different about a Mercedes-AMG. The sharpened profile. The wider wheel arches. The road-hugging lower bodywork. At the AMG Design Center in Affalterbach, the aggressive character of Mercedes-AMG takes shape based on the advanced, high-performance technology beneath its skin. So while every AMG bears the Three-Pointed Star -- shorthand for the legendary craftsmanship and quality of Mercedes-Benz -- it's designed with the presence and the performance to set it apart.

WIDE STANCE

High-performance handling calls for enhanced road grip, which is delivered by wider axle tracks on most models, as well as wider tires.

REAR DIFFUSER

Used in auto racing to manage airflow exiting from under the vehicle, most AMG models incorporate it as a functional or stylistic element.
