Unique to the SLS AMG GT is its 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8. With peak output of 583 hp @ 6,800 rpm and 479 lb-ft or torque @ 4,750 rpm, it is among the most powerful engines of its kind to be fitted standard to any car in production. Numerous racing-derived features team up to deliver lightning-quick response in every driving condition, from engine braking into a corner to pouring on the power as you exit, along with 0-60 in just 3.6 seconds and a top track speed of 197 mph. Forged-alloy pistons, a rigid one-piece bedplate, and reinforced camshafts, valvetrain and crankshaft assure enduring performance in the heat of competition or over years of enjoyment. Extensive weight reduction comes from using aluminum screws, magnesium intakes, forged pistons, and optimization of components from the connecting rods to the oil pump. The result is a class-leading 1.28 hp/lb of engine weight and specific output of nearly 94 hp/liter of displacement, without turbocharging.
To improve lubrication during hard cornering and other extremes, a dry sump replaces the traditional oil pan with a remote reservoir, an highly efficient variable-vane oil pump and an elaborate cooling system. An additional benefit of this setup is a lower overall engine profile, allowing the engine to be mounted lower in the vehicle, behind the front axle. This configuration contributes significantly to the SLS AMG GT's ultralow center of gravity and ideal 47:53 front/rear weight distribution.
The cylinder walls of the diecast aluminum block are plasma-sprayed in an AMG-exclusive process that benefits performance, efficiency and durability. Twin Wire Arc Spray (TWAS) coating creates a mirror-like, ultrahard finish that reduces friction, oil blow-by and wear without needing cylinder liners. The super-smooth cylinder bores and lightweight forged pistons reduce the power required to overcome inertial losses, for stronger power strokes yet more immediate rev response to the throttle.
From the intake to the exhaust, the flow of air, fuel and exhaust gases is precisely tuned to maximize throughput, combustion and cleanliness. Air begins its journey through the engine via eight dramatic velocity stacks, each nearly a foot in length. A lightweight magnesium intake manifold features resonance tubes to help throttle the air at lower rpm and maximize volume at higher engine speeds, encouraging the flow of air into the combustion chambers.
In addition to the optimized intake, remapped throttle and engine management programming helps provide instantaneous and exacting fine-tuning of the mixture under all conditions of load, rpm, and both operating and atmospheric temperatures. A remarkable achievement in lower crankcase design maintains positive pressure throughout the stroke cycle, for rapid cylinder charging and scavenging with virtually seamless transitions between open-throttle and rev-down situations.
The intoxicating exhaust sound is a uniquely visceral element that can also thrill spectators. Post-combustion gases are rapidly ushered to advanced catalysts and high-volume rear-mounted mufflers via a fan-type tubular manifold, minimizing backpressure. Each performance phase adds up to a distinctive audible signature: the growl at startup, an unmistakable crescendo under throttle, an only slightly mellowed rumble at a steady cruise, and a majestic refrain during downshifts and engine braking.
Race-proven dual-clutch technology offers instant, efficient response to any driving situation. Even and odd-numbered gears are divided among two shafts, such that the next gear is already pre-selected and awaiting instant engagement the moment the current gear is released. The SLS AMG GT's electronic controls deliver more aggressive shifting under higher loads, sharper shift character in the Manual mode, and quicker automatic shifts in the Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Sport+ modes.
The SLS AMG transaxle incorporates the transmission and limited-slip differential, and is mounted at the rear axle, greatly contributing to the ideal 47:53 front/rear dynamic balance. A highly rigid, extraordinarily lightweight driveshaft employs the "torque tube" principle to transmit the engine's output to the transaxle. A one-piece design composed of carbon-reinforced polymer, it provides direct transfer of power without lag or loss, and with an overall weight of less than seven pounds.
Four shift modes are driver-selectable: For everyday on-street driving, Controlled Efficiency is tuned for smooth throttle response and gear changes while keeping response instantaneous. Sport mode raises the shift points and cuts shift times up to 30%. Sport+ and Manual modes upshift in 100 milliseconds, a feat facilitated by partial fuel and ignition suppression and the dual-clutch design's pre-selection of the next gear in sequence. Each mode also engages specific throttle mapping.
As enticing as it is intriguing, the AMG DRIVE UNIT's driver-oriented pushbutton controls enable the selection of individual settings for the 3-stage ESP®, suspension and drive modes. A rotary control selects the mode for the MCT transmission. The distinctive centerpiece is the AMG E-SELECT gear lever embossed with the AMG crest, electronically shifting directly between R, N and D with a gentle nudge. A brief tap of the "P" button is sufficient to activate the parking lock. Disclaimer
A pair of aluminum paddles strategically positioned behind the upper steering-wheel spokes allows you to manually upshift and downshift the 7-speed DCT transmission with just a flick of your fingers.
A driver-activated Race Start function optimizes traction and startup revs for maximum launch control, with precisely timed automatic shifting for the most rapid acceleration.
Standard on the SLS AMG GT, the AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension features racing-derived double wishbones at all four wheels. All of the suspension arms and the hub carriers are forged aluminum, maximizing strength and rigidity while minimizing unsprung weight for more precise handling response. Advanced, electronically controlled damping instantly varies the suspension characteristics to the driving situation, reducing body roll, pitch and dive while maximizing agility and tire contact.
The driver can select from two suspension modes at the touch of a button. Sport mode is the standard setting, with the damping thresholds tuned for quick response to large wheel movements with more compliant response to small motions such as bumps and irregular pavement. Sport+ mode sharpens its reflexes, engaging the firmer damping mode at lower thresholds of body and movement for more direct response to greater dynamic demands.
The rack-and-pinion steering system is mounted to a rigid, lightweight subframe. A constant ratio helps assure the most direct, predictable response and feedback through the 3-spoke AMG performance steering wheel, while speed-sensing power assist helps assure consistent effort. In addition to its racing-style flat-bottom design, ideally placed spokes and aluminum shift paddles, the steering wheel features a red band at 12 o'clock to help provide quick visual orientation of the steering angle.
Race-proven compound front rotors are designed to provide excellent heat dissipation and dimensional stability at the extreme temperatures generated in high-performance driving, especially on the track. Enormous 15.4-inch cast-iron front discs "float" over their aluminum center bowls via stainless-steel pins, and are clasped by 6-piston fixed calipers finished with Red paint and AMG logos. The one-piece rear discs are 14.2 inches and fitted with 4-piston fixed calipers, also painted Red.
Exotic forged-alloy wheels feature 10 Y-shaped spokes whose micro-thin design defies their exceptional strength while displaying the massive brakes. The spokes and thin perimeter are machine-polished, set off by Matte Black inlays. The wheels and high-performance tires are staggered in both width and diameter, for maximum power delivery with quick, crisp steering response: 9.5x19-inch front wheels are fitted with 265/35R19 tires, while 11.0x20-inch rear wheels wear 295/30R20 tires. Disclaimer
Multistage ESP offers a mode for every driving situation: On, Sport and Off. With ESP On, detected instability results in braking intervention at one or more wheels, plus a reduction in engine torque, to help rotate the car back onto the driver's intended course. Sport mode allows for higher drift angles in performance driving, raising the brake-intervention and torque-reduction thresholds. ESP Off removes intervention altogether, making the results a direct expression of the driver's skill. Disclaimer
Though fully conceived and developed by AMG, the SLS AMG's body structure and safety systems all conform to the industry-leading standards of Mercedes-Benz. In addition to its advanced restraints and active safety systems, the SLS underwent the full regimen of crash testing during its development, starting with countless computer simulations with its aluminum spaceframe and body, all the way to the addressing the unique needs driven by its performance potential and gullwing doors.
A system of eight advanced air bags is designed to offer protection in a variety of accident types. Dual-stage front air bags are augmented by knee air bags for both the driver and passenger. And each seating position is provided with a side-impact air bag, plus a head protection air bag that deploys upward from the window sill area. Disclaimer
Bright white LED Daytime Running Lamps, integrated along the lower edge of the headlamps, help increase the visibility of the SLS AMG GT to oncoming traffic by illuminating whenever the car is switched on. With long life and low energy consumption, the light-emitting diode (LED) lamps also add a distinctive high-tech styling touch. LED taillamps, feature a stylish horizontal motif and dark-tinted lenses, along with longer bulb life and lower energy consumption. LED turn signals are included.
Bi-Xenon headlamps help deliver greater visibility than halogen headlamps because their brighter, whiter light is much closer to natural daylight. A dark-tinted treatment on the internal housings casts an aggressive appearance even with the lights off. High-pressure washers help keep the headlamps at their peak of performance in foul weather.
When the vehicle is traveling above approximately 20 mph, radar technology senses when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area and automatically alerts the driver via an illuminated red icon in the appropriate side mirror. The system also gives an audible warning if the driver activates a turn signal while a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. Disclaimer
During low-speed maneuvers, PARKTRONIC's ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers detect nearby objects within the system's field of view. Audible signals and illuminated displays in the cabin help you navigate tight spaces with confidence.
This innovative driver-assistance feature helps you to see directly behind your vehicle when reversing. Shift into Reverse, and a wide-angle camera mounted in the rear displays a live view of what's behind the vehicle on the COMAND screen in the dashboard. Disclaimer
BAS® senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal, and immediately applies maximum available power boost. By eliminating the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough, Brake Assist can potentially reduce the overall stopping distance. Letting up on the brake pedal releases BAS. Disclaimer
The Antilock Braking System (ABS) senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking, and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together up to 30 times per second. By preventing wheel lockup, ABS helps preserve the driver's steering ability during hard braking. Disclaimer

The core objective of the SLS AMG GT, to be an ideal representation of the super sports car, starts with the core of the vehicle itself: A superlatively strong yet lightweight aluminum spaceframe that allows its front-mid-engine layout and racing-derived chassis to perform at their best. It weighs just over 530 lbs, some 30 percent less than a comparable all-steel structure. The finished vehicle weighs less than 3,700 lbs, so each of the engine's peak horsepower carries less than 6.5 lbs.
Composed almost entirely of aluminum, only 4% of the spaceframe's weight is from any other material, notably the high-strength steel windshield frame and pillars. The remainder is a staggering equation of numbers, materials and processes: Some 1,300 body elements are assembled using nearly 1,000 rivets, over 500 bolts, 230 feet of carefully welded seams and 430 feet of adhesive bonds, all assembled in a 30-hour process that is nearly 90 percent performed by hand.
The iconic gullwing doors are not a gratuitous retro homage but an ideal way to provide proper access. Counterbalanced and pneumatically assisted, each door swings up in a 70-degree arc to ease quick entry and exit, despite the car's low center of gravity and seating position. Opening and closing are further assisted by clever hinge kinematics and a linkage in the armrest. An added benefit is revealed in narrow garages or a transport trailer, as the doors require only minimal outward clearance.
Precisely formed from genuine carbon fiber, the Final Edition's hood crowns the 538-hp in a tribute to its racing roots. No paintwork conceals its authenticity, with the carbon fiber presented in all its glory to make an immediate statement of style and performance. An active, rear-facing duct in the hood helps extract heat from the engine compartment while also reducing the car's drag coefficient.
Virtually every detail of the body serves a purpose and benefits from extensive refinement in the wind tunnel. The smooth nose, flush lamps, side mirrors, compact cockpit and rear end are fine-tuned to minimize drag and maximize stability and tire adhesion. All visible air inlets and outlets, as well as some not so obvious, efficiently help cool the wheels, brakes and powertrain. A new carbon fiber rear wing and mesh diffusers between the tailpipes help manage the airflow beneath the car.
Both a visual and functional complement to the Final Edition hood, the front air dam is undercut by a carbon fiber cross-strut. Known in racing circles as a splitter, it helps the SLS AMG GT slice through the air while ideally balancing front-axle downforce and cooling airflow to the running gear.
Functionally similar to the larger version employed on the SLS AMG GT3 racecar, a prominent rear wing is precisely shaped to help increase rear-end downforce, aiding high-speed stability. Crafted from unpainted carbon fiber with aluminum hardware, the wing also helps ensure that the Final Edition SLS AMG exits its production run, or any curve, with an indelible visual impression.
The SLS-exclusive AMG instrument cluster features a dual-binnacle design with aluminum rings. New black gauge faces sharply contrast with the illuminated red indicator needles, which perform a full sweep of the scales upon startup. Ancillary instruments are neatly embedded within the larger speedometer and rev counter.
A unique performance instrument resides in clear view between the twin-pod gauges. Operated via controls on the steering wheel, this AMG performance menu offers three modes: "Warmup" displays the engine oil and coolant temperature. "Setup" reveals the selected driving modes from the AMG DRIVE UNIT, including ESP, transmission and suspension settings. "Race" mode brings up the exclusive RACETIMER, allowing the driver to record lap times on dedicated racing circuits. Disclaimer
