Part sports car, part racecar, and every part a work of art

As SLS AMG GT is not only designed and engineered to be a masterpiece of performance. From its handcrafted V-8 engine to its hand-finished cabin, and in the precision which every component is forged, cast, tuned, balanced and assembled, it's also a testament to the high art of automaking, with each vehicle lovingly crafted one by one. On the racetracks of the world, where brakes and manifolds glow red-hot and every second counts for hours on end, AMG racecars repeatedly prove that massive power is nothing without extreme endurance. And in the hearts and hands of our drivers, the bond that forms between an AMG automobile and its driver, whether a professional or an enthusiast, is both an instant spark and an unfading glow. What goes into each SLS AMG GT is also what it inspires and ignites: pure driving passion.

    A unique alloy of carbon,
    metal, leather and lacquer

The exotic elements that are shaped, cast, forged, sprayed, stitched and flowed into an SLS AMG GT unite to form something far greater than their individual characteristics. They create its character. Exceptional strength and light weight come from items simple and complex: The carbon-polymer driveshaft weights less than seven pounds. And the spaceframe is nearly 96% aluminum and comprised of some 1,300 pieces, 975 rivets, 580 bolts, and over 200 feet of welded seams. The most mirror-like finish on the car is one you might never see: The cylinder walls are finished using an AMG-exclusive Twin Wire Arc Spray process that creates a superlatively durable and low-friction surface. Among the elements you will see and touch: The new steering wheel's leather rim is hand-stitched with side grips wrapped in Alcantara®, a material that combines the soft grip of suede with greater durability and easier care. And its optional Carbon Fiber cockpit trim is handcrafted using the same layer-upon-layer process as the finest concert instruments.

    Where tradition lives,
    and innovation grows

Handcrafted performance has been an AMG hallmark since its birth in 1967. But so has the constant development of innovative ways to increase power, endurance and quality. If one envisions the typical automotive assembly plant as an enormous, meandering line of sparking robots, the relatively compact and quiet hall where the SLS AMG GT is assembled seems almost Zen-like. Its aluminum spaceframe is nearly 90% hand-welded, taking roughly 30 hours to create the smooth, flowing metal and some 230 feet of artfully neat seams. And yet, behind the scenes, high technology backs up all of the handwork. The completed raw body is laser-measured at more than 1,500 points to confirm tolerances some 40% tighter than industry norms. Virtually every diecast aluminum component is X-rayed to assure an absence of gaps or pockets. And of course, every system, including the completed vehicle, must meet the unparalleled standards for safety that are represented by the Three-Pointed Star in its grille.

    Individuality: Another reward of handcraftsmanship

While the SLS AMG GT is a super sports car like no other, the uniquely meticulous manner in which is produced allows for an extraordinary degree of personalization. Even in its standard form, the new GT trim stands apart, with dramatic black trim and forged 10-spoke wheels. Three other wheels are also offered. Available paint colors range from exclusive SLS hues, to designo Magno matte finishes, to the one-of-a-kind ALUBEAM Silver with the aura of liquid metal. The standard GT cockpit is outfitted in Black leather or leather/Alcantara®, enlivened by racy red top-stitching and seat belts. A matching red band marks 12 o'clock on the steering wheel, while Piano Black Lacquer trims the console, air vents and doors. Additional trim options include aluminum and carbon fiber elements, as well as exquisitely crafted leathers in a variety of solids, two-tones and even a classic woven motif. Beyond even that, a new designo STYLE Package features a striking Porcelain color scheme with any of three accent colors, along with diamond-quilted leather seat and door inserts.  (Disclaimer)

handcrafted V-8

Unique to the SLS AMG GT is its 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8. With peak output of 583 hp @ 6,800 rpm and 479 lb-ft or torque @ 4,750 rpm, it is among the most powerful engines of its kind to be fitted standard to any automobile currently in production. Numerous racing-derived features team up to deliver it monumental output with lightning-quick response: Forged-alloy pistons, a highly rigid one-piece bedplate, and reinforcement of the crankshaft, valvetrain and four overhead camshafts. Extensive attention to weight reduction includes replacement of virtually every steel screw with aluminum, magnesium intakes, the lighter forged pistons, and optimization of numerous components, from the connecting rods to the oil pump.

carbon fiber

In place of the standard cabin appointments in Piano Black Lacquer or the no-charge option of aluminum trim, genuine carbon fiber brings the SLS AMG GT's rich racing heritage directly to its console and doors.

GT cockpit

Black designo leather, carefully selected by eye and finished by hand, is featured on the seats and door trim. The seat inserts can be fitted with matching leather or suede-like Alcantara®, both detailed with bold Red top-stitching continues to the leather-covered dash, console, armrests and steering wheel. As finishing accents, the seat belts and the borders for the AMG floor mats match the Red stitching, and the AMG Affalterbach crest is embossed into each head restraint.

steering wheel

The 3-spoke AMG performance steering wheel features numerous racing-inspired design elements. The flattened lower section allows easier leg movement during entry and exit, as well as on the go. The ideally placed upper spokes integrate multifunction controls on the face, while aluminum shift paddles are positioned for fingertip shifting right behind them. And new for 2013, a red band wraps around the rim at 12 o'clock, to help provide quick visual orientation of the steering angle.

Race Start

A driver-activated Race Start function optimizes traction and startup revs for maximum launch control, with precisely timed automatic shifting for the most rapid acceleration

fabric top

At the touch of an artfully designed switch in the console, the exquisitely tailored fabric top raises or lowers in a mere 11 seconds, even at driving speeds up to 30 mph. Available in three colors, the soft top is stretched tautly over an aluminum, steel and magnesium frame whose light weight helps preserve the car's extraordinarily low center of gravity.

brake calipers

Race-proven compound front rotors feature cast-iron discs "floating" over their aluminum center bowls via stainless-steel pins, to help provide excellent heat dissipation and dimensional stability at extreme temperatures. The front discs are 15.4 inches with Red-painted 6-piston fixed calipers. The one-piece rear discs are 14.2 inches with Red 4-piston fixed calipers.

driveshaft

A highly rigid, extraordinarily lightweight driveshaft employs the "torque tube" principle to transmit the engine's output to the transaxle. A one-piece design composed of carbon-reinforced polymer, it provides direct transfer of power without lag or loss, and with an overall weight of less than seven pounds.

Twin Wire Arc Spray

An AMG-exclusive process for finishing the cylinder walls of the diecast aluminum block benefits performance, efficiency and durability. A plasma-spray coating method called Twin Wire Arc Spray (TWAS) creates a mirror-like, ultra-hard finish that reduces friction, oil blow-by and wear without the need for cylinder liners. The combination of the super-smooth cylinder bores and lightweight forged pistons reduces the power required to overcome inertial losses, resulting not only in stronger power strokes but more immediate rev response to the throttle.

forged-alloy wheels

The ultimate in rigidity and light weight, the standard SLS AMG GT wheels employ exotic forged-alloy construction. Ten micro-thin spokes, whose elegant appearance defies their exceptional strength, provide an almost total reveal of the magnificent brake hardware. The wheels and high-performance tires are staggered front to rear not only in width but also in diameter, with the wider 20-inch rear wheels and tires sized for maximum power delivery to the pavement, and the 19-inch front wheels optimized for crisp steering response.

designo STYLE Package

A truly exquisite expression of handcraftsmanship, the designo STYLE Package offers a choice of three accent colors set amid a dramatic Porcelain background, along with diamond-pattern stitching on the seat and door trim inserts. Three color options (Mocha Brown, Mystic Red and Titanium Grey) are available in a solid or two-tone treatments.

aluminum spaceframe

Composed almost entirely of aluminum, only 4% of the frame's weight is accounted for by any other material, notably the high-strength steel of its windshield frame and pillars. Some 1,300 body elements are assembled using nearly 1,000 rivets, over 500 bolts, 230 feet of carefully welded seams and 430 feet of adhesive bonds, all assembled in a 30-hour process that is nearly 90 percent performed by hand. The outcome: An exceptionally rigid structure that weighs in at just over 530 lbs, a savings of some 30 percent over a comparable all-steel structure.

AMG Carbon-Ceramic brakes

Specially developed carbon-ceramic rotors and brake calipers offer reduced weight and excellent braking performance on the track. Gold-painted brake calipers provide the visual identification. Made of carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic, the extremely hard discs increase service life, while enhancing durability under extreme heat and loads, for even shorter stopping distances and higher fade-resistance during high-performance driving. The ceramic discs are even larger up front (15.8 inches), with even higher total braking force, and are 40 percent lighter.

front brake rotors

Race-proven compound front rotors feature cast-iron discs "floating" over their aluminum center bowls via stainless-steel pins, to help provide excellent heat dissipation and dimensional stability at extreme temperatures. The front discs are 15.4 inches with Red-painted 6-piston fixed calipers. The rear discs are 14.2 inches with Red 4-piston fixed calipers.

7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT® DCT

The 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT transmission features race-proven dual-clutch technology for instant, efficient response to any driving situation. The transaxle, which incorporates the transmission and limited-slip differential, is mounted at the rear axle, greatly contributing to the ideal 47:53 front/rear dynamic weight distribution. New enhancements to the SLS AMG GT include thorough reprofiling of the electronic controls to deliver more aggressive shifting under higher loads, sharper shift character in the Manual mode, and quicker automatic shifts in the Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Sport+ modes.

Dark-tinted headlamps

Bi-Xenon headlamps help deliver greater visibility than halogen headlamps because their brighter, whiter light is much closer to natural daylight. A new, dark-tinted treatment casts a more aggressive appearance even with the lights off. High-pressure washers help keep the headlamps at their peak of performance in foul weather.

dry-sump lubrication

To improve the engine's lubrication during hard cornering and other extreme conditions, a dry-sump system replaces the traditional oil pan approach with a remote reservoir, an innovative and highly efficient variable-vane oil pump, and an elaborate cooling system. An additional benefit of this setup is that it creates a lower overall engine profile, which allows the engine to be mounted lower in the vehicle, behind the front axle. This configuration contributes significantly to the SLS AMG GT's extraordinarily low center of gravity and ideal 47:53 front/rear weight distribution.

four driver-selectable modes

Four driving modes can be selected via the console-mounted AMG DRIVE UNIT: "Controlled Efficiency" is the standard mode for everyday on-street driving. "Sport" mode raises the shift points and reduces shift times. And both a "Sport+" mode and paddle-shifted "Manual" mode deliver lightning-quick 100-millisecond shifts. Each mode also engages specific, corresponding profiles for the throttle mapping.

designo Black leather

A highlight of the new SLS AMG GT is its dramatically outfitted cockpit.

AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension

The AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension features racing-derived double wishbones at all four wheels, with suspension arms and the hub carriers forged from aluminum. Advanced, electronically controlled damping instantly varies the suspension characteristics to the driving situation, reducing body roll, pitch and dive while maximizing agility and tire contact. The driver can select from two suspension modes at the touch of a button: Sport and Sport+.

3-stage Electronic Stability Program

A 3-stage ESP system offers a mode for every driving situation: ESP ON, ESP SPORT and ESP OFF. In ESP ON mode, the detection of instability results in braking intervention at one or more wheels, accompanied by a reduction in engine torque, to help rotate the vehicle back onto the driver's intended course. ESP SPORT mode allows for considerably more active driver involvement and pleasure for performance driving. It raises the dynamic thresholds for the system's intervention, for greater driver control at higher drift angles. ESP OFF removes electronic intervention altogether, making the results a direct expression of the driver´s skill. While braking in ESP OFF mode, the ESP SPORT mode is activated until the driver releases the brake pedal.

gullwing doors

Counterbalanced and pneumatically assisted, each door swings upward in a 70-degree arc to a height that's an ample five feet above ground. Entry and exit are therefore quick and easy, despite the car's low center of gravity and seating position. Opening and closing of the doors is further assisted by clever kinematics of the hinges and a linkage in the door armrest, where the handle resides.
