AMG has developed an entirely new engine for a new era of performance. Generating high output from less displacement, the 469-hp 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 is more responsive yet up to 30% more efficient. Its massive torque reaches its 479 lb-ft peak at just 1,750 rpm, and holds it all the way to 4,500 rpm, for a 4.0-second 0-60 time and instant acceleration at any speed. A fuel-saving ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for immediate acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.
Advanced piezo-electric fuel injectors spray fuel directly into each cylinder with exceptionally precise metering, ultrafine atomization and incredibly quick on/off switching speed. Based on the immediate, individual needs of each cylinder's combustion cycle, they can supply the ideal fuel spray at up to 2,900 psi with millisecond speed. A new generation of multispark ignition can fire the fuel mixture up to five times in a single cycle, for stronger and cleaner performance.
For better performance and packaging, the new AMG V-8's twin turbos are placed inside the "V" of the engine. A sports-car first, it sends the compressed charge from each turbo to its bank of cylinders via an extremely short path, with near-zero pressure loss or turbo lag. The high-pressure turbos spool up quickly to as much as 186,000 rpm. The setup is also highly efficient from intake to exhaust, with liquid-cooled intercoolers and close-mounted catalysts that reach peak efficiency in seconds.
The cylinder walls of the diecast aluminum block are created in an AMG-patented process that benefits performance, efficiency and durability. NANOSLIDE® technology uses a twin-wire arc spray to coat the bores with an ultrahard layer that's honed to an ultralow-friction, mirror-like finish. Without the added weight of cylinder liners, the bores and lightweight forged pistons are matched with even greater dimensional precision, for more immediate and consistent power over a longer service life.
From its bedplate to its chain-driven water pump and innovative materials, the new AMG V-8 combines light weight with lasting strength. Aluminum screws, zirconium-alloy 4-valve heads, new components precision-crafted from magnesium and advanced composites, and a highly rigid sand-cast block all team up for extreme performance during seconds of elation or years of enjoyment. The 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT® MCT transmission features innovative multi-clutch technology for instant response to any driving situation. A wet startup clutch eliminates the torque converter, improving performance and fuel-efficiency. The driver can select from four driving modes: Controlled Efficiency features a fuel-saving ECO Start/Stop function. Sport mode raises the shift points and cuts shift times by 30%. A new feature of the AMG C63 lets the driver dial in the car's performance character with the flip of a switch on the console. AMG DYNAMIC SELECT offers three preset modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+) plus an Individual mode you can configure a la carte. Each mode includes settings for the engine and throttle response, shift programming, ESP, suspension, exhaust sound, ECO Start/Stop system and more. Four shift modes are driver-selectable: For everyday on-street driving, Comfort is tuned for smooth throttle response and gear changes while keeping response instantaneous. Each mode also engages specific throttle mapping, to assure seamless response whether driving in town or powering out of a corner on the track.
A pair of aluminum paddles strategically positioned behind the upper steering-wheel spokes allows you to manually upshift and downshift the 7-speed MCT transmission with just a flick of your fingers. With any automatic shift mode selected, using the paddles temporarily engages manual shifting with no need to change modes. Automatic shifting is restored after a few seconds of paddle inactivity, though it'll hold your gear if you're mid-corner or deliberately engine-braking down a grade.
A fixed mechanical locking factor under load helps prevent wheel slip and improve traction when needed by distributing torque to the wheel with greater grip.
The AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension responds with equal skill to the demands of the racetrack, city streets, highways and back roads. Lighter and more rigid than the standard C-Class, its AMG-developed springs and shock absorbers deliver highly responsive tracking and cornering with a balance of comfort and control, even as driving conditions vary. Exclusively developed front and rear axles feature AMG-developed components and mounting to increase rigidity while decreasing weight. Revised elastokinematics and wheel location create more negative camber, for higher grip and stability when cornering at high speed, and greater precision under virtually all conditions. Race-proven compound front rotors are designed to provide excellent heat dissipation and dimensional stability at the extreme temperatures generated in high-performance driving, especially on the track. Enormous 15.4-inch front discs are bolted to aluminum center bowls. They're grasped by powerful 6-piston fixed calipers finished with grey paint and AMG logos. The one-piece rear discs measure 14.2 inches and are fitted with substantially sized grey calipers.
Multistage ESP offers a mode for every driving situation: On, Sport and Off. With ESP On, detected instability results in braking intervention at one or more wheels, plus a reduction in engine torque, to help rotate the car back onto the driver's intended course. Sport mode allows for higher drift angles in performance driving, raising the brake-intervention and torque-reduction thresholds. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) can automatically detect a substantial loss of tire pressure in any wheel and alert the driver via a warning message in the multifunction display. The advanced TPMS can also display the numeric tire pressure for each mounted wheel.
The SmartKey remote control integrates remote door locks and trunk opener, a removable valet key, and a remote panic alarm. You may selectively unlock only the driver's door and fuel filler, or all doors plus the trunk and fuel filler. The vehicle can be started via a pushbutton in the dash, thanks to a standard KEYLESS-START feature.
The standard antitheft alarm system is armed automatically when you lock your Mercedes from the outside. It sounds the horn and flashes the exterior lights if a door, the trunk or the hood is opened without first unlocking the vehicle.
