How Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles Work

Advanced Powertrain Technology

PHEVs pair a traditional gas engine with an electric motor and large-capacity rechargeable battery. This allows the vehicle to run on pure electric energy, gas or a combination of both — ideal for emission-free drives around town or everyday commutes with the convenience of a gas-engine for longer trips. The vehicle seamlessly switches to gas power as needed, while a portion of the battery capacity will remain in reserve to recharge through regenerative braking.

Most batteries can last between 100,000 – 200,000 miles when properly cared for. If the battery generally maintains between 20% and 80% state of charge and is not subjected to extremely hot temperatures, upkeep can be minimal.

PHEVs can partially recharge themselves through regenerative braking, which captures energy typically lost during deceleration. However, to fully recharge the battery, an external power source is required.
